Description
Space Imperia 4X is an officially licensed digital adaptation of the board game Space Empires 4X by award-winning board game publisher GMT Games. Space Imperia 4X brings a top-selling space strategy board game to PC, streamlining its strong mechanics, high replayability, and quick matches (1–2 hours on digital).
Breich Games' owner and lead developer, Brett Reichert, is a West Point graduate and former US Army Officer. Space Empires 4X is Brett's favorite board game ever — and, over the course of four years, he turned a side project into a real digital game.
The game's defining feature is the way in which it emulates true military strategy. Masking unit identities, fleet composition, and technologies researched, as well as scouting, conducting effective attacks, and leveraging decoy ships are core gameplay elements.
The singleplayer demo released on March 19, 2026. Playtime metrics are quite strong, with an average play time of 2h 38m; 40% of users playing at least 1h; and a median play time of 36m.
Features
Pure Wargame
There is only one victory condition in Space Imperia 4X: destroy the enemy home planet. Over the course of the game, players colonize new planets, construct new ships, research more technologies, explore unknown space, and fight enemy ships.
Quick Matches
Experience the depth of a strategic 4X game that takes a fraction of the time of most other titles in the genre. A two-player game against one AI can take as little as 45 minutes, while most games are resolved in 1–2 hours.
Hidden Information
Unit identities, fleet compositions, and technologies are concealed from opponents until battle. Deploy decoy ships to mislead, probe enemy positions to gather intelligence, and wage war as much through deception as through firepower. This is the core differentiator — few, if any, 4X games have a hidden information system as simple and elegant as Space Imperia 4X has.
Wide Technology Tree
Research new ships, better movement, mines, fighters, and cloaking raiders, among others. But every technology has a counter! Minesweepers defeat mines; point defense shoots at fighters first; and scanners completely negate cloaks. When you reveal special ships is just as important as how many you build — giving the enemy less time to react to your tech decisions is critical.
Meaningful Turn-Based Combat
Combat is resolved sequentially, one ship at a time until one side remains. A well-timed battle can eliminate enemy ships before they even get to act. Retreating from battle is just as important as staying, and securing ship kills is one of the most important (and difficult) aspects of combat in Space Imperia 4X.
Board Game Mechanics Streamlined for Digital
The board game requires a lot of pen-and-paper upkeep to play. In digital form, Space Imperia 4X takes out all aspects of manual upkeep, allowing the player to focus on what is fun — building friendly ships and destroying enemy ones.
Singleplayer, Live & Async Multiplayer
Play against AI opponents locally or play against others online. In asynchronous format, players can play in multiple long-term games with turn timers, time banks, and a full Discord integration for notifications and minor in-game actions.
History
Owner and lead developer Brett Reichert first discovered the board game Space Empires 4X in 2012, while he was still a cadet at West Point. Brett was an active member of the Wargames club at the Academy, and regularly played large-scale tabletop games with other future Officers. Space Empires 4X's mechanics had all the hallmarks of those large-scale tabletop games while also being a relatively quick board game. Over the years, as an Officer, he taught it to as many people that would play.
He left the Army in 2018 to pursue a career in software engineering. Then, while working at a financial technology company, he decided he needed a side project. So, in 2022, he began working on Space Imperia 4X, merely so he could play online with his friends that had since moved away. As he put it, “if I can build banking APIs, I can probably build Space Empires”.
Brett worked on the project off-and-on for 3 years. Then, in the spring of 2025, he was laid off. He hadn't touched Space Imperia 4X in almost a year, and a friend encouraged him to finish the prototype and pitch GMT Games. So, Brett made the game his job. Six weeks, a cold LinkedIn connection, and a three-hour chat later, Brett secured the license for the game.
